Sallie Eaton Biography

Sallie Edgerton was born on June 28, 1917 to Henderson and Luanna Gales Edgerton in Franklinton, NC. She was the daughter of a construction worker and the youngest of twelve children. During the summer of her thirteenth birthday, she tragically lost both of her parents to illnesses. On December 25, 1933, she married Christopher Columbus Eaton and their union produced eight children: Curtis, Susie, Christopher Jr., Josephine, Fannie, Calvin, Juliet, and Muzette.

In 1936, Sallie relocated to Washington, DC, subsequently securing a position at DC General Hospital. She dedicated 46 years of her life to her work at this institution before entering retirement. Tragically, she became a widow at the age of 39, but demonstrated admirable resilience and commitment in raising her children alone. Her spiritual journey led her to First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church, where she became a faithful member. Sallie’s involvements included active participation in the Myrtle Biscoe Circle of the Missionary Society, the Consoling Choir, and Sunday School. However, her service was curtailed in May 1996 due to illness. She passed away on October 27, 1997.

Sallie was an exemplary model of maternal love and devotion, extending her affectionate care to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She instilled these significant values in her children and grandchildren, galvanizing them to establish the Sallie Eaton Benevolence Foundation in her honor. This endeavor aims to perpetuate her legacy of empathy and generosity.
